Community Centre Table Tennis in Brighton

Community Centre Table Tennis

The Whitehawk Inn

Several community centres in Brighton and Hove have been provided with a table tennis table, bats and balls as part of continuing work to increase participation. Using Priority Zone funding, Table Tennis England offered the tables to all interested centres on an initial three month trial basis, with a view of the centres keeping the tables if they are being used regularly. Placing table tennis tables into community centres is a great way of reaching people that would not normally have an opportunity to play.

The centres are free to incorporate the table into their own schedule of activities in order to maximise use. Table Tennis England will keep in touch with the community centres and provide further support and development advice as participation grows around the tables.

One of the eleven community centres provided with a table so far is The Whitehawk Inn. The Whitehawk Inn is a charity in Brighton providing information and advice about learning and work, and a range of other support activities for adults. As a community hub the centre sees lots of people, most of which make use of the services on offer and others that like to pop in for a coffee and a chat. The friendly and informal setting offered by the Whitehawk Inn provides a great opportunity to get people playing. The table is available for use several times per week either in the cafe area or, if weather permits, outside in the garden.

A table has also been provided to Hop 50+, based at St John’s Church in Hove. The centre and café open seven days a week and is a centre for providing a wide range of activities and social opportunities for people aged 50+. They aim to improve wellbeing and be a place where people can learn new skills and enjoy good food and company. Along with table tennis, the centre offers physical therapy sessions, minibus trips and other social activities for people to enjoy.

Two table tennis sessions have been added to the centre’s timetable, on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. The table is also made available for use when space in the hall allows.
